The goal | The subject aims to provide students basic knowledge about rearing and care of wild and exotic animals, about importance and ways of conservation of endangered animal species; to explain importance of rearing and care of hunting game and hunting structures; to provide basic information about hunting ground management, problems of game survival in modern age and specific diversity of hunting game. | |||
The outcome | A student should know basic rules of rearing and care of wild and exotic animals in captivity and the importance of the ZOOs. A student should understand how to provide basic needs for wild and exotic animals in accordance to their biological requirements. A student should learn how to manage wild and exotic animals adequately, to provide good accomodation and lisf of food, using a knowledge to improve the awareness of visitors and employees in city ZOOs about a need of health protection and welfare of wild and exotic animals. A student should learn how to rear hunting game, to understand ecological specificities of reared and free hunting game species, to apply an aquired knowledge in hunting ground managment and to improve the awareness of hunters about the need of health protection and welfare of huting game | |||

Contents of lectures | Importance of city ZOOs: conservation of endangered species, investigaion, education and rehabilitation (1) Providing of enclosure and nutrition of animals in city ZOOs in accordance with their biological needs and natural habitat. Providing conditions for normal behaviour of animals in city ZOOs – behavioural enrichment of enclosure (2). Learning about the possibilities and means of animal reproduction in city ZOOs, importance of co-operation with other ZOOs for animal exchange, rearing and care of rejected offspring. Managment, restrainment, disclocation and transport of alive animals (2). The role of a veterinarian and health protection of animals in ZOOs. Level of endargement of species on „Red list“, IUCN status and level of protecion – CITES status of specieses (2). The importance of hunting for biodiversity through history. Types, characteristics and importance of our hunting grounds – the relationship of a huter and game (2). Biological specificity, morphology and taxonomy of hunting game. Areal of wild specieses and interrelationships within the areal. Wild specieses as pests and vectors of infectious diseases (2). Modern trends in open and fenced hunting grounds. Habitus, situs and needs of hunting games in fenced areas. The possibility of experimental production and reintroduction of hunting game (2). Contents of exercises | Mastering the adequate rearing and care of exotic mammals in captivity (4). Mastering the adequate rearing and care of exotic birds in captivity (3). Mastering the adequate rearing and care of exotic reptiles in captivity (2). Pointing the good and bad examples of accomodation and care of animals in city ZOOs. Practical examples of the importance of various types of enrichment of enclosures. The ways of capturing and safe manipulation with animals. (2). Safety in city ZOO. Evaluation and ways of providing safety of animals, employees and visitors in city ZOOs. (2). Labelling of animals, data basis and list of animals in city ZOOs with remarks on IUCN and CITES status. Methods of teaching | Theoretical instruction through interactive teaching with applicatrion of audio-visual methods (PowerPoint Presentations, films). Practical instructrion in existing city ZOOs in Serbia (Beo ZOO, Palić) as a block teaching, practical work and attendance, creative workshops, optional visits of ZOOs abroad. Instruction through practical work and attendance in pheasanteries, open and fenced hunting grounds. Visiting of hunting museum and hunting trophies exibitions. | |||
